Factual Entertainment: Patisserie and Cake : 6 x 30 Minutes
Why do we love cakes and chocolate so much ?
Ask Will Torrent, expert chocolatier and pâtissier and he’ll come up with one word, ‘Indulgence’. In our busy lives it’s our special and affordable treat, a pat on the back for working hard, a guilty pleasure. But this simple joy is turning into another component in the obesity and diabetes time bomb that effects all of us.
Will Torrent believes that we should all have the ability to indulge without fear of our waistline or adverse health effects. He doesn’t want to look back and see that the food he is passionate about has become a negative factor in the nation’s health.
“People assume that as soon as you take all the sugar and fat out you lose the taste which is completely wrong. Top Chefs have produced Michelin starred menus which are nutritionally balanced when cooked and more importantly low in the ‘nasty bits’. Why can’t it be done for our favourite treats?”
Will’s setting out not just to create new cakes and patisserie which are good for us but taste as superb as their fatty sugar laden predecessors. He’s going to consult and test recipes with some of the world’s top chefs and chocolatiers to produce a range of cakes, pâtisseries and chocolates which will be taste tested by the general public across the UK each week.
Can he succeed where many companies have failed – he thinks the answer is ‘Yes’ because he is one our countries best pattiseriers as well as being a development chef for Waitrose.
Having creating this superb range he’s going to try and sell it into the supermarkets, small coffee shops and tea shops across Britain to change the way we view our indulgences – if it tastes great it doesn’t mean it’s bad for you.
Will Torrent is an award winning patissier and chocolatier who started his culinary life with Heston Blumenthal at the Fat Duck and helped out James Martin on TV in ‘Sweet Baby James’.
